October 2009 Update

Staffing and Program Updates

Research and Sponsored Programs (RASP):

Ann Marie (Annie) LoPrieno will join the College of Graduate Studies and Research as Director of Research and Sponsored Programs (RASP) on November 2, 2009. Annie has more than 12 years of pre- and post-award grant and contract experience, including experience as a senior research administrator at a leading medical school. In her new role, she will provide leadership for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and work with members of the campus community to develop policy and procedures to support grant and contract productivity and ensure compliance with federal regulations.

In August, Jeane McGraw joined Research and Sponsored Programs as the new Post-Award Coordinator. She provides assistance to faculty and staff in the processing, management, analysis and monitoring of grants and contracts, working with Project Directors to spend funds and submit reports according to the grant/contract requirements. She also works with the various departments on campus to accomplish the goals of each grant while complying with state purchasing and employment guidelines. Finally, Jeane helps resolve problems, responds to questions, and provides assistance in interpreting fiscal data on accounting reports. She can be contacted at 389-6605 or by email at jeane.mcgraw@mnsu.edu.

Honors Program:

Dr. Chris Corley was appointed Director of the Undergraduate Honors Program in August 2009, when the Honors Program became part of the College of Graduate Studies and Research. A faculty member in the history department, where he has established a reputation as an excellent teacher and scholar, Dr. Corley has demonstrated a strong commitment to working with undergraduate students and mentoring undergraduate research. His own experience as an honors student combined with his international experience and leadership of the University’s General Education Committee makes him the ideal candidate to provide leadership during this critical phase in the Honors Program’s development (see item below). His office located is located in WA 228 and he can be reached at 389-5191 or christopher.corley@mnsu.edu.

Honors Program Development:

The new university Honors Program will be submitting a curriculum proposal to UCAP this fall. Faculty and staff can learn about the curriculum and honors competencies at three orientation sessions scheduled for October 14th (11-12, CSU 284C); and October 15th (11-12, AH 219; 12-1, AH 225). Please contact Chris Corley for more information.

Research News

RASP will be closed Wednesday, Oct. 21st to Friday, Oct. 23rd: Research and Sponsored Programs staff will be attending the National Council of University Research Administrators annual conference. Please notify the office (Kristel, x6605) as soon as possible if you have any upcoming submission deadlines within that time frame.

External Funding Grants:

As specified in the University’s Policy on Facilities and Administration Costs (formerly Indirect Costs), unused carry forward in Facilities and Administration Cost accounts will revert to a central fund for disbursement by a sub-group of the Budget Sub Meet and Confer. As stated in the policy, the funds must be reinvested in activities that have a high probability of external funding and/or increase competitiveness for external funding opportunities. A call for proposals for External Funding Grants, which will be funded from the unused carry forward (approximately $200,000) is posted on the Research and Sponsored Programs website. Proposals are due to the Research and Sponsored Programs Office by 4:30 pm on Monday, November 2, 2009. For clarification or additional information, please contact Kristel Lynch in Research and Sponsored Programs (kristel.lynch@mnsu.edu; x6605).

Seeking Faculty Publications for TOMORROW:

The sixth edition of TOMORROW will be published in March 2010, with the goal of showcasing our faculty’s scholarly and creative achievements for the 2009 calendar year (i.e., works with a 2009 publication date or copyright). Due to space limitations, we can list only journal articles, book chapters, books, and published conference proceedings. For creative efforts we are interested in regional, national, and international performances, exhibitions or other related/relevant efforts. Please submit your publications and/or creative accomplishments directly to the College of Graduate Studies and Research between now and Friday, December 11, 2009. We strongly prefer electronic submissions, which should be emailed to cesr@mnsu.edu. We will distribute a draft to each college in early January and hope to have the final verified list by February 1, 2010.

The Center for Excellence in Scholarship and Research (CESR):

The Center for Excellence in Scholarship and Research (CESR) has relocated to WA 228. Steve Bohnenblust, CESR Director, can still be reached at 389-6278.

Please note that the SPSS workshops announced earlier this week are full. CESR will offer additional SPSS workshops early in spring 2010.
