Each year, the College of Graduate Studies and Research awards 43.5 University Graduate Assistantships (UGA) to academic programs based on a competitive application process. Graduate Assistantships are awarded in one of three categories:

  • Teaching Assistant: A graduate student who (a) assists a faculty member who is the instructor of record for a course, or (b) is the instructor of record for an undergraduate course under the supervision or mentorship of a faculty member. The duties of such an appointment may include work in the classroom, in laboratories, in online learning environments, or in other learning settings.
  • Research Assistant: A graduate student who is engaged in activities that support faculty research.
  • Academic Assistant: A graduate student with focused responsibility for applied professional practice within an academic department or a University administrative unit. These positions may include significant student or client interaction and include an intentional student development and educational component.

Applications are typically due in November and awards are announced prior to the semester break. For 2013–2014 awards, the deadlines are as follows:

November 9, 2012:

Applications are due to College Deans

November 16, 2012:

Applications are forwarded from College Deans’ offices
to the College of Graduate Studies and Research

December 10, 2012:

2013–2014 UGA awards announced
