Introduction

NOTE: The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is constantly seeking new memberships, especially inviting people who have expertise with diversity issues and vulnerable populations.

The IRB is a local administrative body established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research conducted under the sponsorship of Minnesota State University, Mankato. All research activity involving human subjects conducted at or under the sponsorship of the University must have IRB approval.

The IRB has the authority to approve, require modification in, or disapprove all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction as specified by federal or local institutional policy. The IRB provides assurances to research subjects that every reasonable attempt has been made to protect their rights and safety as subjects. This page provides the essential information and forms necessary to submit an IRB proposal.

NOTE: See "Educational Materials" below for information and samples.

Proposal Review

Turnaround times mentioned below are determined from the working day on which a proposal is electronically signed and available in IRBNet for review. Proposals must be both submitted and signed. Please note that a proposal may be submitted by anyone but it must be signed by a university employee before the turnaround time clock begins. We recommend that you allow turnaround times of at least 5 to 7 working days for Level I submissions or resubmissions. For Level II proposals, investigators should expect at least 10-13 working days for turnaround time. Level III proposals will be reviewed at the monthly IRB meeting on the first Friday of the month. Level III proposals should be submitted and signed 5 working days prior to the IRB meeting. As proposals are submitted, IRB determines the level of review (Level I, etc.).
