2009/2010 Funding Opportunities

Research and creative project support grants are available for projects to be presented at the 2010 Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The three types of funding opportunities are outlined below. Students may apply for all four types of grants; however, only one grant will be awarded per project. Scholarships are competitive and based upon specific criteria.

  1. Minnesota State Foundation Student Research Awards: up to $2000
    A Foundation grant is a $1000 stipend and up to $1000 for supplies. “Supplies” include consumable items and other necessary materials that are unavailable at the university. Stipends are issued once in the fall and once in the spring ($500 each) contingent upon presentation at the URC. These grants are funded by the MSU Alumni Foundation. Foundation Grant Awardees are encouraged to report back to the Alumni Foundation upon completion of the project with a summary of his/her experience participating in the research process and the URC.
  2. NorthStar STEM Alliance Awards: up to $1000-$2000
    These awards are available to students from underrepresented ethnicities enrolled in specific STEM discipline majors. For a complete list of all those who qualify, please see the third page of the 2009/2010 URC Grant Application or go to cset.mnsu.edu/sacc/nssa/.
    - Gold Grant: $1000 stipend and up to $1000 in supplies, including consumable items and other necessary materials that are unavailable at the University. Stipends are issued once in the fall and once in the spring ($500 each) contingent upon presentation at the URC.
    - Purple Grant: $500 stipend and up to $500 in supplies, including consumable items and other necessary materials that are unavailable at the University. Stipends are issued once in the fall and once in the spring ($250 each) contingent upon presentation at the URC.
  3. Undergraduate Research Conference Large Grant: $750–$1,000
    A large grant is a $500 stipend and $250 or $500 in supplies. “Supplies” include consumable items and other necessary materials that are unavailable at the university. Students may also be reimbursed for travel if it is necessary to meet the aims of the proposal. Stipends are issued once in the fall and once in the spring ($250 each) contingent upon presentation at the URC. These grants are funded by the University.
  4. Undergraduate Research Conference Small Grant: $250 or $500
    A small grant is $250 or $500 and can only be used for supplies. That is, it can't be used to provide any compensation for the student in the form of a stipend. If travel is necessary to meet the aims of the proposal, the student may be reimbursed using these funds. “Supplies” include consumable items and other necessary materials that are unavailable at the university. These grants are funded by the University.

A Complete Proposal Must Include

  • A grant proposal that includes all required sections including title of project, purpose, significance, proposed methodology, anticipated outcomes, proposed time line, supply and equipment budget, and bibliography. (see grant proposal guidelines).
  • A completed funding application. Please indicate which grants you are applying for. You may be considered for a single funding opportunity or all four
  • A limited number of Foundation Student Research Awards, NorthStar STEM Awards and URC grants are available. Please indicate in your supply and equipment budget if the study is feasible if awarded a lesser amount. For example, if you request $500 for supplies and are awarded $250.
  • A one page resume for every student researcher involved
  • Electronically submit your application and filled-in application form to urc@mnsu.edu AND a printed copy of your filled-in application form must be submitted to the URC Graduate Assistant in the Research and Sponsored Programs Office (Wigley Administration 325). Your application will not be considered complete without receipt of the signed application form.

To Be Considered for Funding Students Must

  • Be in good standing with the university.
  • Have the support of any MSU faculty member.
