Thesis Funding

The College of Graduate Studies and Research provides financial assistance to partially reimburse students for expenses related to completing a thesis. Stipends up to $250 to support research related expense are available each semester; however, funding is available on a limited basis. This financial support is currently available only to students completing a thesis as the program capstone project.

Appropriate use of these funds might include the purchase of certain consumable supplies, specialized tools, or an instrument to facilitate data collection. Funding proposals that may result in long-term, multiple uses within the department or that may eventually add to university or departmental libraries are encouraged.

Funding is currently not available for:

  • travel expenses related to thesis research
  • computer hardware, computer software, and books that graduate students in specific disciplines are expected to have already obtained
  • cameras
  • financial compensation for the researcher or for others
  • items that fall under the heading of "general office supplies" ( folders, envelopes, items for document storage)
  • expenses associated with printing and photocopying

Other considerations:

  • The student’s advisor must certify that the funding requested is necessary for the thesis research.
  • Students must have registered for thesis credits prior to submitting a funding request.
  • Students must be registered (but not necessarily for thesis credits) during the semester that funding is requested.
  • Applications for funding must be submitted no later than the semester prior to the student's anticipated semester of graduation. Applications submitted during the semester of graduation will not be considered.
  • Detailed receipts and invoices will be required before the funding is released.
  • An approved thesis proposal must accompany the funding request.

Deadlines to request funding are October 1 and February 1. Students may apply as many times as they wish; however, a student may receive funding from this initiative only once.
