Writing Support

Students Discussing Newspaper

The College of Graduate Studies and Research offers multiple opportunities to support and encourage graduate student writing at MSU.

  • Professional Development and Writing Workshops. Each month, faculty members from across campus lead both a writing–focused and a professional development–focused workshop. The Writing Workshops take place during the first week of each month and the Professional Development Workshops take place during the third week of each month. The schedule for fall 2009 workshops is in place but future workshops are subject to the input of graduate students and faculty members.
  • Graduate Student Writing Groups. Graduate Student Writing Groups are available to all enrolled graduate students. Depending on the students who wish to be involved, groups will be interdisciplinary and comprised of no more than 6 members. Graduate student writing groups meet at least once a month during the semester to focus on any writing that graduate students do on campus or for their studies. Each graduate student writing group will have a faculty advisor who will meet with the group at least once a month. There will be at least one group dedicated to the International Student population, which will have a mentor with ESL training to assist the International Student community as fully as possible.
  • Graduate-Level Writing Courses. Three new courses will be offered in the English Department beginning in Spring 2010. They are 500–level courses that focus specifically on writing, rhetoric and composition at the advanced graduate level.
