2009-2010 Faculty Brown-Bag Writing Workshops

September 9th, 12-1 pm, CSU 202
An Introduction to Writing in the Classroom

This brown-bag will provide a brief introduction to Writing in the Disciplines (WID) and Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), as well as a forum for interdisciplinary groups of faculty to discuss writing in their classrooms. Participants will have the opportunity to create strategies for using, assessing, and actualizing writing in the classroom.


October 21st, 12-1 pm, CSU 202
Effective Writing Assignments

This brown-bag will provide participants the opportunity to discuss, analyze and construct effective writing assignments crafted to aid students in the production of their written work. The brown-bag facilitator will provide a packet of possible writing assignments, workshops, and inkshed exercises for participants.


November 4th, 12-1 pm, CSU 202
Teaching the Assignment: Rhetorical Methodologies

This brown-bag will introduce participants to several techniques that have historically helped students grapple with the various writing situations they confront in the classroom. Participants will be provided with information and the opportunity to discuss the Rhetorical Situation, Audience Evaluation and the Toulmin Schema among other techniques.


February 17th, 12-1 pm, Location TBA
Managing Time and Teaching Writing

This brown-bag will provide participants with a wide variety of strategies and in-class exercises in order to incorporate meaningful writing into the classroom in time conscious ways.


March 31st, 12-1 pm, Location TBA
Writing Assessment

This brown-bag will provide participants the opportunity to use, discuss, analyze, and implement a variety of assessment strategies focused specifically on writing activities. The assessment techniques will maintain a focus on student content and on time management.


April 21st, 12-1 pm, Location TBA
Writing Pedagogies

This brown-bag will provide participants with an overview of the historical development of the practices of writing in the classroom, as well as current strategies in use in writing classrooms from across the disciplines. Participants will receive an up-to-date bibliography of useful texts for the writing classroom.
