September 9, 2009 (CSU 204)
The Research Question

Participants in this workshop will discuss a variety of methods for determining a specific research question that makes a contribution to their field. The Research Question workshop will provide heuristics for students to begin thinking about new research projects at any stage in their graduate work. This is the first of a two-part series of workshops (see the October 5th workshop, below).

September 23, 2009 (CSU 202)
Grant Writing

No matter what the field or discipline, grant writing is an integral part of academic research both in graduate school and beyond. This grant workshop will provide students with comprehensive resources enabling them to research, find, draft, and submit to a wide variety of public and private funding opportunities.

NOTE DATE CHANGE: October 12, 2009 (CSU 202)
Workshopping the Research Question

This is the second of the two-part Research Question workshop. In this workshop, student will bring a draft (or several drafts) of pertinent research questions for their courses, applied projects, or theses in order to receive feedback from a broad interdisciplinary community of academic researchers and writers.

Reading Job Ads/PhD Application Materials

Participants should bring any job ads or PhD program application information in hard copy to this workshop. In this workshop the facilitator will lead a discussion of understanding and responding to job ads and PhD program applications so that students will be better prepared to tailor their CV (resume) and application letters. This is the first of a 3-part workshop series.

Preparing CV and Application Letters

This is the second of a 3-part workshop series. In this workshop students will bring hard copies of their current Curriculum Vitae or Resume with them. Students can use materials from this workshop to prepare for the third in the 3-part series.

November 18, 2009 (CSU 202)
Workshopping the CV and Application Letters

In the third part of the workshop series, students will review the CV and Application Letters they have constructed based on their selected Job Ad or PhD program application materials. Participants will work in groups to review and give constructive feedback on CV and Application Letter drafts in order to prepare them for submission.

December 2, 2009 (CSU 202)
Writing a Review of Literature

In almost all disciplines, a review of literature is an integral part of any research project. It is also a somewhat unique and sometimes confusing genre. In this workshop participants will receive information on what a review of literature is meant to do, how to go about composing one, as well as examples of successful reviews.
