New Student Checklist

Welcome to the graduate community at Minnesota State University, Mankato. We hope the steps below will permit you to commence your studies with as few impediments as possible.

 Additional resources for new graduate students may be found at the online orientation web pages. You may at any time direct questions concerning your graduate program to your advisor, program Graduate Coordinator, or to Graduate Studies grad@mnsu.edu.

 

1. ACTIVATE YOUR STAR ID

The StarID replaces many login IDs with one ID. Use your StarID to log into services such as MavMAIL, D2L Brightspace, and more. Use StarID Self Service to activate your StarID.

2. SEND YOUR FINAL TRANSCRIPT

Submit an official final degree transcript, verifying the award of your undergraduate degree. Failure to produce this document, if you have not done so already, will result in you being unable to register for graduate courses, and being ineligible to possess a graduate assistantship. An official transcript may be mailed, directly by your undergraduate institution, to University Admissions at 122 Taylor Center, Mankato, Minnesota, 56001 or gradapp@mnsu.edu .

3. REGISTER FOR COURSES

You are encouraged to speak with your advisor prior to registering. Choose courses and register online. Additional information concerning registration deadlines and drop/add dates can be found on the Registration and Academic Records web pages.

4. IMMUNIZATION FORM

If you attend courses in Mankato or Edina, submit the Immunization form. Failure to complete this form will result in a hold being placed on your ability to register.

5. OBTAIN YOUR MavCARD

The MavCARD is your official University identification card. Stop by the MavCard Office in the Centennial Student Union- Room 117, or visit https://mankato.mnsu.edu/university-life/campus-services/mavcard/.

6. MavMAIL

MavMAIL is the official communication method for Minnesota State University, Mankato. Check MavMAIL at least once per day for critical University, class information, and updates. MavMAIL is available on your mobile device. 

7. D2L BRIGHTSPACE

D2L Brightspace is the learning management system (LMS) software we use at Minnesota State, Mankato. It allows you to access your course information online, turn in assignments, and complete trainings.

8. BILLING AND PAYMENT

Billing policies, registration deadlines, and estimated expenses are posted on the web pages of the Student Financial Services—Campus Hub. Visit e-services to view your bill or make a payment.

9. APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID

If you wish to apply for financial aid, complete your FAFSA . It is advantageous to submit your FAFSA as early as possible in order to be considered for some scholarship and graduate assistantship opportunities.  The FAFSA is also required to obtain loans and to be considered for graduate student work-study programs.  The financial services specialists at the Campus Hub are available to answer questions and connect students with additional advising assistance if needed.

10. COMPLETE SEXUAL VIOLENCE PREVENTION TRAINING

Completing the Sexual Violence Prevention Training (SVPT) course is required to comply with the State of Minnesota Sexual Harassment statute that students complete sexual violence prevention training. The SVPT course is administered through D2L and produced by the Chancellor’s Office. You will be receiving an email message from the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX providing instructions for accessing this resource through D2L.

11. VISIT THE KEARNEY INTERNATIONAL CENTER WEBSITE (FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS)

If you are an international student, visit the Kearney International Center website. Learn more about receiving your I-20, essential preparation, and orientation.

12. REVIEW GA POLICIES AND PAYROLL INFORMATION (FOR GRADUATE ASSISTANTS)

Students with graduate assistantships may learn more about GA policies and payroll, and sign up for direct deposit.
